Get Your Tacostada On

Taco Bell is making a run for the border. Yep, the fast food giant is opening restaurants in Mexico and marketing its food as “American,” which is more appropriate than the “Mexican” cuisine it pretends to serve here in the States.

Taco Bell has tried this before — back in ‘92. It didn’t work then, but maybe now the time is right?

There are many amusing aspects to this story. I like the fact that Taco Bell has invented the word “tacostada” to describe what 99% of the United States knows as a taco (stuff contained within a shell instead of a tortilla), but my favorite part is this quote from pop culture historian Carlos Monsivais:

It is an absurd idea, and given that it’s so absurd, it may just be successful in upper-class areas.

Ah, God bless the upper class. Or should I say, tacostada bless the upper class?
