Restaurants I Visited This Past Week

I love food. Here are this past week’s restaurants:

  • Jimmy Carter’s Cafe. A local favorite. We’ve been coming here for years, and we’re never disappointed. The atmosphere is very relaxed; the food is excellent and reasonably priced. On this trip I had chipotle pork, rice, black beans, corn tortillas. My wife had shrimp and chips.
  • Thai Cafe. Excellent buffet, friendly service. The Pad Thai is a bit sweet for my taste, but the curries are delicious. This time I tried a dish I’d never seen there before, choo chee tofu. It was outstanding — similar in flavor to the rahd prig served at Karinya in Pacific Beach. Also, for a buffet, they’re not afraid to give their dishes a little kick.
  • Ashoka the Great. Good dinner menu, excellent Indian buffet. We almost always come for the buffet. There are many tasty chicken and lamb dishes, but I usually stick to the vegetarian items. This is no reflection on their food; I just have a preference for vegetarian when it comes to Indian cuisine.
  • Jasmine. Great dim sum. Probably 95% of the time we come here it’s for the dim sum. This time, however, we came for dinner on my wife’s birthday. I had hot and sour soup (very peppery!) and kung pao shrimp (boring choice, I know, but delectable). She had duck.
  • Maui Maui BBQ. I’m not sure of the name; it’s only been open a couple of weeks. We wanted to eat at Teri Cafe on Clairemont Mesa but forgot that this location is closed on Sundays. Then we tried Yakimono’s across the street, next to Rubio’s, only to find that it had turned into this Hawaiian barbecue place. With the explosion of L & L locations in San Diego over the past few years, the taste for Hawaiian food seems to be catching. What better place to open a new one than just off Convoy? This was our first time here, but we both were impressed and will be returning.

Did I mention that I love food? ;-)

On this day…
