Walking around Mission Bay
My wife has been training for the Carlsbad Marathon. She’ll be walking the half marathon this coming Sunday. Every weekend in preparation she goes for a long walk — often with a group of people — down at Mission Bay. Sometimes I come with her and just hang out at Hospitality Point while she’s walking. I’ll bring a book and an iPod, maybe a notebook and pen in case inspiration hits.
Yesterday she wasn’t walking with her group, and I decided to give it a shot. I’ve hiked the Grand Canyon (yes, that was almost 20 years ago, but still) so I figured why not? With good cloud cover and a light breeze, we ended up walking 7.32 miles in just a tick over 2 hours. I had jazz tunes running through the XM Radio I got for Christmas. An excellent way to view the bay.
While you are walking, you don’t think about how long it is. You mostly think about making the next step. For me, since I am not in training, pain came around mile 5 or so. From there it’s a matter of being stubborn, which comes naturally to me since I am a Taurus. Just keep moving. As long as you keep moving, you’re good.
When it hits you is afterward, when you’re driving past the places you just walked. The entire scale shifts, and you realize just how far you’d gone.
Then you go for Chinese buffet and head home to play with the dogs.
On this day…
